Al Avison was a comic book penciller and inker who began his career in the late 1930s. Avison's earliest published work was in 1940, inking over Jack Kirby's pencils for the lead story in Blue Bolt Comics #4, published by Novelty Press.
Avison began working for Marvel's predecessor Timely Comics in the early 1940s, and it was there that he co-created the character Whizzer, a superhero who possessed incredible speed. The character first appeared in U.S.A. Comics #1 in 1941 and would be featured in the majority of future issues of that series. Whizzer would go on to join Timely's/Marvel's first superhero team known as the All-Winners Squad.
In 1942, Jack Kirby and Joe Simon left the Captain America series, to move onto other titles leaving the duties of pencilling and inking to Avison and penciller Syd Shores from Captain America Comics #10 onward.
Avison worked on a variety of iconic Marvel characters of the Golden Age such as the Vision, the Blonde Phantom and the Black Marvel, the Young Allies and Tommy Tyme. He also co-inked the first appearance of Jack Kirby's Marvel Boy in Daring Mystery Comics #6.
His career continued into the early 1950s. In addition to working for Marvel, Avison also freelanced for other publishers like Fawcett Comics, working on the original Captain Marvel series and for titles like Pocket Comics, published by Harvey Comics.
Other titles Avison worked on include Capser the Friendly Ghost, Joe Palooka, The Green Hornet, Humphrey and Little Dot. He also provided cover art on series like Speed Comics.
The last known published work of Avison was penciling and inking the cover art for the horror anthology Chamber of Chills #26, published by Harvey Comics.
