Chester Gould was first hired by the Chicago Tribune as a cartoonist in 1931. Gould also worked to the Detroit Mirror on Sunday, which is where he first introduced his famous character, Dick Tracy.
Dick Tracy was a New York detective who solved mysteries. The popular daily comic strip, as well as a weekly Sunday comic strip, would run for 46 years, always drawn by Gould from his Woodstock, Illinois home.
Gould kept up with the latest police methods for solving crime to keep the comic strip accurate and up to date, even taking courses in forensics and investigative procedures.
Gould won the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award in 1959 and 1977. In 1978, he won the Inkpot Award and in 1980 he was honoured by The Mystery Writers of America for his work with a Special Edgar Award.
Gould was inducted into the Oklahoma Cartoonists Hall of Fame in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma by Michael Vance in 2005.
