Dave Stevens professional career began in 1975, where he was hired on as an inker to fill in the pencil work of Russ Manning's Tarzan newspaper comic strip, as well as the Star Was newspaper strip.
In 1977, Stevens began drawing storyboards for the animated television series, The Godzilla Power Hour and Super Friends, both of which featured the character Hanna-Barbera.
Stevens also created story boards for live action film and television projects, like Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark and Micheal Jackson's Thriller music video throughout the late seventies and early eighties.
In 1982, Stevens wrote and drew his first original series named after its main character, Rocketeer. There were a total of three instalments of the series from 1982-1995, which were published under different companies with long delays in between each instalment. This was due to Steven's intense research and attention to detail in illustrating.
The rights to the character were also bought by Walt Disney Studios in 1991 to make a live-action feature film, The Rocketeer, for which Stevens sat in as the co-producer for. The series was later relaunched by IDW Comics after Steven's death with various artists filling in for the artwork.
Outside of his work with Rocketeer, Stevens provided the cover art for many comics, graphic novels and paperback books, as well as painting for many private commissions.
He did much of the cover art for Comico's Jonny Quest series.
Steven's was also well known for this "good girl" artwork as he was a long-time fan of the 1950s style pin-up models like Bette Paige. The girlfriend of the Rocketeer was aesthetically based on the look of Bette Paige, with whom he eventually became friends with and helped revive her popularity.
Stevens is seen by many in his industry to be among the most talented artists of his generation.
