George Perez began his comic book career in the early 1970s, working under artist Rich Buckler as his assistant.
His first published pencilling was in 1974 in Marvel's Astonishing Tales #25. From there Perez was given a regular strip called "Sons of the Tiger" within Marvel's popular series The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, at which time he helped co-create, along with Bill Mantlo, the character White Tiger.
The character would not only go on to make popular appearances in issues of the Amazing Spider-Man, but also was the first Puerto Rican superhero in the industry.
Perez made his name truly known following that creation with his work on The Avengers, beginning with issue #141. While being a regular contributor of cover art for The Avengers series, Perez also provided art for other popular series of the time such as Creatures on the Loose, The Inhumans, Fantastic Four and Man-Wolf.
In 1980, Perez began working for DC Comics, where he was tasked with pencilling the characters for the publisher's not yet released The New Teen Titans. The series was a great success for the publication, and the move to DC also allowed Perez to take up the opportunity of drawing for Justice League of America, a long time personal desire for the artist.
In addition to his regular work on those series, Perez also contributed to series like Crisis On Infinite Earths, Wonder Woman and Superman.
Perez was the recipient of an Eagle Award for Best Continued Story in 1979 and was nominated for a Jack Kirby Award in 1985 for his work on The New Teen Titans. He has also won several Comic Buyer's Guide Fan Awards such as Favourite Artist in both 1983 and 1985 and Best Penciller Award in 1987.
Perez also won the Favourite Cover Artist Award for three years in a row from 1985-1987.
