J. H. Williams is best known as a comic book penciller. One of his earliest published works was the miniseries Deathwish in 1994, written by Maddie Blaustein.
Following that, Williams also pencilled the Starman spin-off limited series, Shade. He first gained industry attention after pencilling the ten-issue series Chase for DC Comics in 1997.
Williams has frequently collaborated with inker Mick Gray on a number of series, like Promethea, and several DC graphic novels such as Justice Riders and Son of Superman.
He has also served as a regular artist on Detective Comics, Final Crisis and Batwoman, for which he also served as a co-writer. His time on Batwoman won him a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comic Book in 2012. Williams was the main artist on The Sandman: Overture, a prequel series to Neil Gaiman's Sandman.
In 2020, Williams was among several creators to revive the Batman: Black and White anthology.
Williams has also drawn for Marvel Comics on series like Uncanny X-Men, Wolverine and Wolverine '95.
Williams has won many awards over his career, including four Eisner Awards for Best Single Issue for Promethea #10, Best Cover Artist for Detective Comics, Best Penciller/Inker for Detective Comics and Best Painter/Digital Artist.
He also won a Harvey Award in 2006 for Best Artist on Promethea, and an Inkwell Award in 2012 for Favourite Artist to ink their own pencil work for the series Batwoman.
