Jeff Lemire first made a name for himself in the comic book industry after self-publishing his comic book Lost Dogs through his Ashtray Press imprint in 2005. Lost Dogs was met with critical acclaim and won a Xeric Award. Lemire then serialized Fortress, a science-fiction comic strip for UR Magazine.
In 2008, Lemire wrote and illustrated the Essex County Trilogy, published by Top Shelf, which earned him two nominations from both the Eisner and Harvey Awards. The trilogy won him a Young Adult Library Services Award and a Joe Schuster Canadian Comic Book Creator Award for Outstanding Cartoonist as well as the Doug Wright Award for Best Emerging Talent.
In 2012, he published The Underwater Welder, via Top Shelf again and the graphic novel was met with widespread critical acclaim.
Lemire also wrote and illustrated The Nobody for DC Comics under their Vertigo imprint, a two-colour story about identity and paranoia in a small town. Also under the Vertigo imprint, Lemire wrote and illustrated the full-colour series Sweet Tooth from 2009-2013. The series has since been picked up by Netflix for a movie adaptation.
In 2010, Lemire signed an exclusive contract with DC to write the one-shot Brightest Day: Atom for the DC Universe in collaboration with Mahmud Asrar. He is also responsible for the relaunch of the Superboy series.
Following the end of his contract with DC, Lemire moved over to Marvel Comics and began writing the All-New Hawkeye as his first Marvel title along with artist Ramon Perez. He also collaborated on the series Extraordinary X-Men with Humberto Ramos and Old Man Logan with artist Andrea Sorrentino. In 2015, he and artist Greg Smallwoood would draw the relaunch of Moon Knight.
Lemire has also done work for Valiant Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics.
In 2017, Lemire won an Eisner Award for Best New Series for his work on Black Hammer. He has been nominated for an Ignatz Award and numerous Harvey and Eisner Awards. The Essex County trilogy was one of five titles selected by Canada Reads to be an Essential Canadian Novel of the Decade.
