History of Jim Steranko in Comic Book Art

Jim Steranko worked for a couple different artists throughout the 1950s as an inker for publications like Harvey Comics. He was given several assignments by Marvel Comics in 1966, after touring their studio and meeting with editor Stan Lee.

Steranko was asked to ink several pages for a new super-spy character named Nick Fury, pencilled by Jack Kirby. The character would first appear in Strange Tales #135, with Kirby still serving as the main artists. When the character reappeared for Strange Tales #155, Steranko was now penciling, inking and colouring the character.

Steranko separated himself from other artists at the time, by mixing the traditional comic book art styles of Jack Kirby and Wally Wood with more experimental surrealism like the work of Salvador Dali. While Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. may be Steranko's most prominent work, he also provided artwork for series like Captain America, Doc Save, Shanna the She-Devil, The X-Men, Tower of Shadows and Supernatural Thrillers.

In the mid 1970s, Steranko provided some artwork for DC Comics, like Superman #400. Later he returned to DC, working on projects like variant cover art for Before Watchmen: Rorschach #1 and Action Comics #1000.

He was in inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2006. His series Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. was inducted into the Alley Awards Hall of Fame in 1969, after winning three Alley Awards the year before for Best Pencil Artist, Best Feature Story and Best Cover in 1968.

In 1970, Steranko won a Shazam Award for Outstanding Achievement by an Individual and an Inkpot Award in 1975.
