Kevin Eastman was a longtime fan of comics and in particular the work of Jack Kirby. He drew a variety of different characters before landing on the concept of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles along with his writing partner, Peter Laird in 1984.
The two independently published the first issue in black-and-white. It was a large format, forty page issue with 3,275 initial copies printed. The first printing was funded by Eastman's uncle to the tune of $1,000 under their own publishing company called Mirage Studios. The duo named their company Mirage Studios as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the fact that they did not actually have a studio at the time.
By 1985, the issue had run to an additional three printings. Laird, who had previously worked for a newspaper, turned the comic into a four-page story press kit and sent it out to the Associated Press, United Press International and another additional 180 television and radio stations.
This gave the title a great deal of exposure and attention for their second issue. Advance orders for the followup issue exceeded 15,000 copies and brought Mirage Studios out of debt and into profit. The two could now enter the comic book industry full time.
By issue #5 the series had become so popular that Mirage Comics began licensing out the brand for feature films, animated television series, paperback collections, clothing, coffee mugs and more. Between 1990 and 2016, five feature live-action films have been made of the characters, and three animated television series and one animated film. Several video game adaptations have also been distributed as well.
In 2002, Eastman and Laird parted ways, with Laird buying out Eastman's share of Mirage Studios which eventually was bought out by IDW Comics in 2011. IDW Comics published Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #100 in 2019.
