Michael Kaluta's first published work was in 1970, a three-page adventure story entitled, The Battle of Shiraz which was featured in issue #18 of Flash Gordon for Charlton Comics. Kaluta's first published cover art, House of Mystery #200 was in 1972 for DC Comics. He also worked on the series Secrets of Sinister House, co-creating the character Eve with issue #6.
In 1973, Kaluta and writer Dennis O'Neil created a comic book adaptation of The Shadow and Kaluta drew five of the first six issues.
In 1975, Kaluta along with three other comic book artists, Jeffrey Jones, Barry Windsor-Smith and Bernie Wrightson formed their own artist's commune called The Studio, renting out a loft in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. The four produced a great deal of content there and The Studio ran up until 1979.
In 1981, Kaluta drew the cover art for DC's one-shot Madame Xanadu, which was the company's second direct sales only comic. He has also drawn for numerous other popular DC titles such as Action Comics, Adventure Comics, Aquaman, Batman, Batman Family, The Brave and the Bold, Detective Comics, Justice League of America, Mystery in Space, Spectre, The Spirit, Superman, Wonder Woman and more.
Kaluta has drawn briefly for Marvel Comics as well on titles like Thor and Conan the Barbarian.
In 1971, Kaluta won a Shazam Award for Outstanding New Talent and in 1977 he won an Inkpot Award. He also won a Spectrum Award in 2003 for Grand Master.
