Rob Liefeld's first published story was a DC Comics Bonus Book insert in Warlord #131 in 1988. Following that he drew for Hawk and Dove, a five-issue miniseries which earned him popularity amongst readers, allowing him to draw for Secret Origins #28.
In 1989, Liefeld began working for Marvel Comics, beginning with The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #23. He was then tasked with pencilling for The New Mutants series, taking over from issue #86. At the time the series was Marvel's lowest selling comic to come from the X-Men franchise, but after Liefeld started working on it, sales turned around dramatically. Many credit this to be Liefeld's biggest success in the industry.
By issue #98 of The New Mutants, Liefeld has assumed virtually all responsibilities including pencilling, inking and plotting, with Fabian Nicieza writing the script. The series ended two issues later with The New Mutants #100 and replaced with revamped version of X-Force.
When the first issue was released in 1991, it sold over four million copies, making it the highest-selling comic in the industry at the time. As of 2013, X-Force #1 remains the second highest selling comic in history, with X-Men Vol. 2 #1 being the highest.
In 1992, Liefeld left Marvel Comics to form Image Comics along with several other prominent artists like Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Erik Larsen and others. Each co-founding member created their own studio, which would put out series under the Image name. Liefeld's studio was called Extreme Studios and his first series was called Youngblood, about a superhero team that affiliated with the Teen Titans.
In the later 2000's Liefeld returned to work for DC Comics, drawing for Hawk and Dove again and series like The New 52, Grifter and Deathstroke.
