Sy Barry was born in 1928 in New York City. In 1943, he began studying at the School of Industrial Art in Manhattan. Following graduation, Barry began freelancing for the comic book series Famous Funnies.
His brother Dan Barry was also a comic book artist, best know for drawing the Flash Gordon comic strip, and gave Sy his first professional work as his art assistant.
By the end of the 1940s Barry was freelancing for a number of publishers such as Timely Comics, DC Comics, National Comics and for Lev Gleason. Barry worked on features like The Phantom Stranger and Johnny Peril for National Comics.
He would also continue to assist his brother with the Tarzan comic strip from United Feature Syndicate, as well as the Flash Gordon comic strip from King Feature Syndicate.
In 1957, Barry was hired to draw a comics pamphlet called Martin Luther King and the Montgomery Story, written by Alfred Hassler and Benton Resnik and distributed by the Fellowship of Reconciliation.
When The Phantom artist Wilson McCoy died in 1961, Barry was hired on by King Featues to be the comic strip's successor. Barry remained the The Phantom Daily Comic Strip artist for over 30 years, until his retirement in 1994. Barry would often use pencil artists to help him with the strip, and served primarily as the strip's inker, although he would occasionally do the pencilling as well.
His first daily strip was published on August 21, 1961 and his final strip was on September 3, 1994. The first ever Phantom Sunday page was published on May 20, 1962 and his final was on September 18, 1994.
In 2005, Barry was given an Inkpot Award.
