History of Al Jaffee in Comic Book Art

Al Jaffee began working in the comic book industry professionally for Joker Comics in 1942, as well as freelancing for several other publications at the time.

He then moved over to Timely Comics, which became Atlas Comics and then eventually Marvel Comics. Jaffee worked on their humour features such as Inferior Man, Silly Seal and Ziggy Pig.

In 1955, Jaffee took a job with Mad, a humour magazine. He provided artwork and satirical humour for the publication. In 1964, Jaffee created the fold-in concept, wherein the back inside cover of Mad would have two images, one which the reader could see initially and another that would reveal itself once the reader had folded the page in on itself.

The feature first appeared in issue #84 and was extremely popular, and has become a staple of the Mad magazine format. The fold-in has appeared in almost every single issue from 1964-2020.

Jaffee received a Special Features Reuben Award for his fold-in concept in 1972 and again in 2008 for Cartoonist of the Year. He has also won the National Cartoonists Society Advertising and Illustration Award in 1973.

In 2013, Jaffee was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame at the San Diego Comic-Con. He also holds a Guinness World Record for "Longest career as a comic book artist", clocking in at 73 years and 3 months.
