Kyle Baker became an intern at Marvel Comics while still a senior in high school.
He began making photocopies and filing fan mail for the publisher, but before long Baker became the background assistant to inker Josef Rubenstein. He later served as an assistant to Vince Colletta and Andy Mushynski.
His earliest credited pencilling work was a single page entry of Kid Commandos in 1984 which appeared in The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #13. He was then assigned to ink various issues of Transformers, as well as The Avengers Annual #14 the following year.
Baker's professional story-illustration debut came with Codename: Danger #2 published by Lodestone Comics, for which he did both the pencilling and inking.
In 1988, Baker wrote and illustrated his first 128-page graphic novel, The Cowboy Wally Show, published by Doubleday.
This led to more drawing opportunities from DC Comics, including the revival of The Shadow, a former hero of the pulp fiction era, which Baker reprised that same year. Baker also contributed artwork for DC's Justice Inc.
He and writer Len Wein produced three issues of Dick Tracy for Hollywood Comics, owned by The Walt Disney Company in 1990.
That same year Baker published another graphic novel, Why I Hate Saturn, published by Piranha Press, an imprint of DC Comics, which earned him an Eisner Award.
Baker has won numerous Eisner Awards for Best Artist/Writer, as well as several Harvey Awards for Best New Series and the Special Award for Humour. He has also won several Glyph Awards for Story of the Year, Best Cover Artist and Best Artist.
