Larry Welz was a cartoonist who came to prominence during the 1960s as part of the counterculture underground comix movement happening around the San Fransisco. The artists of this movement often dealt with themes of sex, drugs and violence.
His work was often showcased in the comics anthology Yellow Dog, published by Print Mint in Berkley, California. Other notable titles to feature his work at that time were San Francisco Comic Book, Captain Guts, Funnybook, Bakersfield Kountry Komics and American Flyer Funnies.
By the early 1980s, Welz had created his own series, Cherry Poptart. Welz took inspiration from previous titles which had featured him like Bakersfield Kountry Komics and Funnybook.
In only a short time Cherry became Welz most successful comic book series running for 22 issues and selling numerous posters, stickers and collections. The characters of Welz also became popular tattoos amongst fans of his work.
Welz has collaborated with other artists like Larry Todd, Neil Gaiman and Mark Bodé on different projects over the years.
He also provided the album art for Jeff Walker's record Welcome's to Carcass Cuntry in 2006. In 2016, Welz drew the front and back cover for Marvin Garden's album, 1968.
