Mike Grell
Mike Grell began working in the comic book industry in 1973 for DC Comics, pencilling and inking some of the publisher's most iconic characters like Batman, Aquaman, Green Arrow and the Phantom Stranger.
He was responsible for launching the title Batman Family, along with writer Elliot S. Maggin in 1975. The following year, he collaborated with writer Dennis O'Neil to revive the series Green Lantern/Green Arrow.
Throughout the 1970s, Grell also pencilled for series like Green Lantern and Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes.
In 1976, Grell created his own original series, The Warlord, for which he served as both writer and penciller.
He also drew the nationally syndicated Tarzan comic strip from July 1981 to February 1983.
During the 1980s Grell produced creator-owned series like Job Sable, Freelance and Starslayer, both published by First Comics.
Grell wrote and drew the three-issue Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters. For the limited series, Grell redesigned the title characters costume originally drawn by Neal Brennan to look like more of an urban hunter. He also brought the character out of the realm of fighting super-powered villains into fighting street crime like gangs, terrorists, serial killers and the Japanese Yakuza.
The popularity of the the limited series led to DC hiring Grell to become the writer and occasional artist on the regular Green Arrow series for an 80-issue run from 1988-1993.
From 2002-2203, Green contributed to the Iron Man series, writing storylines and also provided some artwork for stories in X-Men Forever.
In 1982, Grell received an Inkpot Award.
