Norm Breyfogle began working in the comic book industry in 1984 as an artist for DC Comics after he pencilled a six-page story as part of DC's New Talent Showcase. Over the next couple of years, he also worked for First Comics on the title American Flagg and Eclipse Comics on Tales of Terror.
In 1986, he wrote, illustrated and did the lettering for a Captain America story in Marvel Comics' Marvel Fanfare #29. From 1986-87, Breyfogle drew Whisper for First Comics, which became his first monthly series.
In 1987, Breyfogle returned to DC Comics after he was offered the position to be the regular artist on Detective Comics, where he would serve until 1990. In 1990, he moved over to draw for Batman and introduced the character Tim Drake as the new Robin until 1992.
He then launched the new Batman title, Batman: Shadow of the Bat, written by Alan Grant. The series ran for a year and introduced three new characters, Jeremiah Arkham, Mr. Zsasz and Amygdala.
Breyfold drew Batman for DC for six years including his time on Detective Comics, he also drew several one-shots of the character like Batman: Holy Terror and Batman: Birth of the Demon, the latter of which he hand painted.
In 2000, he drew the Elseworlds, a three-issue miniseries and the following year he became the penciller on The Spectre monthly until 2002. In 2003, he pencilled and inked Black Tide, a title published by Angel Gate Press.
Breyfogle returned to DC Comics again in 2011 and reunited with writer Alan Grant to draw DC Retroactive: Batman - The 90s. In 2012, he contributed artwork to Batman Beyond Unlimited, a digital comic series that ran for 18 issues.
DC Comics published a hardcover collection of Breyfogle's early Batman stories entitled Legends of the Dark Knight: Norm Breyfogle Vol. 1 and following his death in 2018, a second volume was published.
