Pete Costanza
Pete Costanza was a comic book artist best known for his artwork on the Captain Marvel series by Fawcett Comics during the Golden Age of the industry. Costanza worked on Captain Marvel during its most popular years and served as one of the series' longest running artists.
Captain Marvel was created by writer Bill Parker and artist C.C. Beck during World War II, around the time that Costanza began working for Fawcett as Beck's chief assistant. The character was originally called Captain Thunder however when a change in name was suggested by the company's editor, it was Costanza who suggested Captain Marvelous which would later be shortened to Captain Marvel.
Costanza also later co-created the Fawcett character Golden Arrow, along with Bill Parker.
Following the discontinuation of Fawcett's comic book line, Costanza left the publisher and began freelancing for Gilberton's Classics Illustrated, Charlton Comics and the American Comics Group. He would adapt literary classics and various historical events into single-issue comic book narratives. Some of these titles include Forbidden Worlds and Magicman.
Later in his career, Costanza would succeed Curt Swan as the artist on the DC Comics' series Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen from 1967 until his retirement in 1971. During this time period he would also provide artwork for series like Adventure Comics, Adventures of Superman and World's Finest Comics.
After he retired from the comic book industry, Costanza took up oil painting, producing over 400 paintings and putting on exhibitions. His paintings centred around themes of adventure, Americana and romance.
