History of Rick Hoberg in Comic Book Art

Rick Hoberg was a comic artist and animator who began working in the industry in the early 1970s. His earliest work was for Russ Mannning's Tarzan comic book series, handling its distribution overseas.

Hoberg would also assists Manning again on the Star Wars daily newspaper comic strip. The Sunday pages for Fred Kida's The Amazing Spider-Man comic strip was also assisted by Hoberg's ghost drawing from 1981-1982.

After being hired by Marvel Comics in 1977, Hoberg provided artwork for titles like The Invaders, Kull the Destroyer, Savage Sword of Conan, Star Wars and What If..?

He co-developed the format for Marvel's Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe series,  along with writer Dennis Mallonee. The two would later also co-create the series Eternity Smith.

Hoberg also worked for DC Comics throughout the 1980s on series like All-Star Squadron, Batman, The Brave and The Bold, Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew, Green Arrow, Green Lantern and the Justice League of America Annual. He was also among the artists who worked on the 1986 DC Challenge limited series.

During the 1990s Hoberg had a long run as penciller on the Green Arrow series. He would also pencil select issues of the series DC's New Gods. He also co-created the series The Strangers, published by Malibu Comics, serving as its penciller as well from 1993-1995.

From 2002-2003, Hober pencilled for the Batman Family series.

Hoberg has also worked in animation as far back as 1978 as a storyboard artist, model designer and layout man on series like Hannovers-Barbera, Marvel Productions, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Comapny, Cartoon Network and Warner Bros, among others.

He has contributed to animated series like Godzilla, The Incredible Hulk, The Amazing Spider-Man, the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Justice League, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the first X-Men cartoon and many more.

In 1984, Hoberg received an Inkpot Award.
