Rick Leonardi began working for Marvel Comics right after graduating from Dartmouth College in 1979. His earliest published artwork was in Thor #303 in 1981.
Leonardi would then collaborate on two limited series with writer Bill Mantlo, the first being The Vision and the Scarlet Witch in 1982 and the second being Cloak & Dagger in 1983-1984. During the 1980s Leonardi also contributed artwork and fill-in on various issues of series like The Uncanny X-Men and The New Mutants.
Leonardi and artist Mick Zeck are credited with co-creating Spider-Man's black-and-white costume for the Secret Wars mini-series in 1984. The creation of the black-and-white costume led to the eventual inspiration for the popular villain Venom.
Leonardi was a regular penciller on the series Spider-Man 2099, which ran for a total of 25 issues. He was also behind the introduction of Genosha, a country in the Uncanny X-Men series, along with writer Chris Claremont.
Leonardi has also worked for DC Comics, and was among the artists who worked on Batman #400 in 1986. He also drew the Batgirl story for Secret Origins vol. 2 in 1987. In 2000, Leonardi drew the intra-company crossover miniseries Green Lantern Versus Aliens.
From 2002-2003, Leonardi drew for the series Nightwing from issue #71-84 and Batgirl for issues #45-52. In 2005, he drew the Star Wars miniseries Star Wars: General Grievous and Superman Returns Prequel #3 to tie-in with the story's theatrical release.
He then went on to draw Superman #665 and #668. Leonardi has also drawn JLA: Classified #43, Witchblade #112 and the 2008 miniseries, DC Universe: Decisions.
Leonardi has also contributed to titles like The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel Fanfare, Excalibur, Daredevil, Thor, New Mutants, Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad, Legion of Super-Heroes and more.
