Dan Decarlo began drawing comics while serving in the US Army during World War II for the weekly military comic strip, 418th Scandal Sheet. He started working for Timely Comics in 1947, the predecessor to Marvel Comics.
His first assignment was to pencil the teen-humour series, Jeanie. After drawing ten Jeanie books, Decarlo was reassigned to draw for Millie the Model and found greater success with that series. Decarlo drew Millie the Model for ten years from 1949-1959, pencilling every issue from #18-93. Decarlo also drew many of the Millie spin-off series like Chili Storm and Sherry the Showgirl and Showgirls.
Decarlo also drew for Standard Comics during the 1950's for series like Jetta the 21st Century, a futuristic teen-horror themed comic. He worked outside of the comic book industry as well for publications like The Saturday Evening Post and Argosy as well as the Timely/Atlas' publisher Martin Goodman's Humorama line which featured pin-up girls and cartoons digests.
By the late 1950's Decarlo began freelancing for Archie Comics while still working for Timely/Atlas. His work has become heavily associated with the publisher for his original characters like Cheryl Blossom, Josie and the Pussycats and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Decarlo was nominated for the Shazam Award for Best Penciller in the Humour Division in 1974 by the Academy of Comic Book Arts. In 2000, Decarlo won the National Cartoonists Society Award for Best Comic Book for Betty & Veronica.
