Dan Adkins first started working in the comic book industry in 1956 after launching his own fanzine, entitled Sara. Adkins, who was based out of Phoenix, Arizona at the time would fill the pages with his fantasy illustrations.
Shortly thereafter, he met Bill Pearson who agreed to become the series co-editor. Adkins would also provide artwork to several other fan publications at this time including Amra, Vega and Xero.
He moved to New York City in 1959 and began freelancing for a number of science-fiction magazines.
In 1964, Adkins was hired on to serve as Wally Wood's studio assistant. Together the two collaborated on several horror series for Warren Publishing on titles like Creepy and Eerie. During his time working in the Wally Wood Studio, Adkins drew many Dynamo stories and was one of the original artists to work on T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, whom Wood drew for Tower Comics.
Adkins was then hired on as an inker for Marvel Comics in 1967, but also pencilled several stories for the Doctor Strange series and several other titles at the time.
He continued freelancing for other publishers while at Marvel such as Charlton Comics, Harvey Comics, Dell Comics, Eclipse Comics, Pacific Comics and DC Comics on titles like Batman and Aquaman.
Adkins also provided paintings for cover art on series like Amazing Stories, Eerie, #12 and Famous Monsters of Filmland #42 and #44.
Adkins was inducted into the Inkwell Awards Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame in 2019 for his lifetime achievement and outstanding accomplishments.
