Dave Gibbons
Dave Gibbons began working in the comic book industry while still living in the UK, working on horror and action titles for DC Thomson and IPC. Some of his earliest published work was in The Wizard Magazine, a 12-part series entitled Year of the Shark Men in 1976.
The following year Gibbons started drawing what would be the first 24 instalments of Harlem Heroes. In 1980, he became the lead artist on Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly, drawing almost every issue from #1-#69.
Gibbons was hired by DC Comics in 1982 to draw Green Lantern Corps, a run of backup stories for the Green Lantern series. He also drew for The Flash and The Brave and the Bold. He also provided artwork for several issues of both DC's Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe and Marvel's The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition in 1985 and 1986.
Gibbon's best known work is for drawing the 12-issue limited series Watchmen, written by Alan Moore. It is now one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time. Time Magazine included it on their list of the List of the 100 Best Novels, making it the only graphic novel to make the list.
He went to work for Dark Horse Comics in the nineties to draw for Frank Miller's Give Me Liberty series. Gibbons also penned the first Batman vs. Predator cross-over series.
He has also drawn for Captain America, Savage She-Hulk, Judge Dredd, Ultimate Spider-Man, Star Wars and many others.
Gibbons has won several awards including an Inkpot Award in 1986 and two Jack Kirby Awards in 1987, one for Best New Series and one for Best New Artist both for Watchmen. In 2018, Gibbons was inducted into the Harvey Award Hall of Fame.
